Similar upgrades will be available for the Tourneo passenger-carrying Tourneo range.
Ford has unveiled a new range of Transit vans that are “rough-road-capable”. These vans will be branded with the “Trail” badge in Britain. The rugged version of Britain’s most loved van is now available for order with first deliveries scheduled for later in the summer.
These newcomers can be identified instantly by the large “Ford” letters in the matte-black grille and the black cladding around their front and rear bumpers. The off-road model is marked by 16-inch alloy wheels, and the “Trail” logos on its front doors. The Transit Custom, which is smaller than the other two vehicles, can be fitted with running boards and roof rails.
The interior features “wipe-clean” leather upholstery. There’s also air conditioning and a heated windshield. Automatic lighting and power-folding doors mirrors are also included in the cost.
The models feature an off-road design with a limited-slip differential, a revised traction control system and a revised traction control system. This is to improve traction on slippery surfaces. Ford’s intelligent all-wheel drive system will be available on the Transit. The rear-drive Transit system sends all power to the rear wheels in normal conditions. However, it can send up 50 percent to front if necessary.
Both vehicles offer a variety of body styles: panel van or double-cab-in–van. There are also a variety of 2-liter diesel engines. Customers can choose from one, 168, or 182-horsepower engines on both vans. Transit Custom Trail models have mild-hybrid technology for added efficiency. 48-volt systems capture energy lost during braking and use it to power the engine when it is under load.
Ford will be adding the new “Active” models of the Transit Custom and Tourneo Custom to its off-road “Trail” workhorses. They have a heavier body than the Trail models and the limited-slip differential can be added as an option. Four-wheel drive is not available.
The 17-inch alloy wheels, mesh grille and body cladding are the distinguishing features of Active models. Roof rails are standard on all models. They also have part-leather seats and the Tourneo Custom Active passenger-carrying Tourneo Active adds blue touches to the instrument panel.
Customers who choose the Tourneo Custom Active have the option of only one body style: the eight-seat van based MPV, but they also get the same three diesel engines as the Transit Custom Trail. Transit Active customers have more options. They can choose from a panel van or double-cab-invan as well as a short- or long-wheelbase option.
Hans Schep, Ford of Europe’s general manager for commercial vehicles, said that the Transit range is versatile and powerful. There is a Transit for everyone, from families looking for a car that can take them on adventures to businesses who aren’t normally connected to the main road to those who live in rural areas to those who just want to get around.
