First Official Images of the VW Polo GTI Facelift Released

Hot hatch receives a predictable design update.

Volkswagen’s facelifted Polo range was introduced just over two months ago in all other than the GTI variant. Ralf Brandstatter (Chairman Volkswagen Passenger Cars), is the hot hatch version’s world debut. The images were posted on LinkedIn. Only two photos were published at the time of writing. They show the design evolution of the Polo.

It gets the new headlights and wider taillights as the regular supermini. However, the exterior design has been updated with red accents, dual exhaust tips and a honeycomb grille that features LED daytime running lights similar to the Golf GTI. The two-tone alloy wheels are very noticeable with the red brake calipers and the contrast black roof.

Ralf Brandstatter promises a “powerful TSI engine” and he is likely referring to a turbocharged 2.0 liter gasoline engine that produced 204 hp (1152 kW) as well as 236 lb (320 Nm), towards the end the model’s pre-facelift life. For a time, the Polo GTI had a six-speed manual gearbox. However, the clutch pedal was removed. It will be interesting to see if the updated model will have a DSG-only option.

We haven’t seen interior images, but expect a standard digital instrument cluster and new climate controls, similar to the Tiguan and Arteon, as well as a touchscreen of 9.2 inches for the infotainment systems.

VW has said that the updated Polo GTI will be unveiled before the end June, and it is already June 30. The full debut should be imminent. This story will be updated once Wolfsburg releases technical specifications and a complete gallery of the Fiesta ST fighter and i20 N fighter.
