It’s a race that is lopsided in many ways.
The new Ford Bronco is no match for the Mustang Shelby GT500, even on rocky terrain. This modified GT500SE with more than 800 horsepower has more power than the Bronco. What’s the point in lining them up on Hallet’s 1.8 mile road course? The secret to the answer may be more than a simple exercise in vehicular foolery. We’ll get to that later.
But we digress. This video shows two Ford icons racing on a 1.8-mile track. This Mustang Mustang is a great car with over 800 horsepower and enough grip to keep up with a 911 GT3 RS at the track. The Bronco’s unique ability to galavant off-road is countered by the Mustang’s unfair advantage. Hall takes the Bronco to every possible shortcut, but unfortunately, the Bronco never makes it off the track. Jump fans will have to wait until the Bronco Raptor.
The Bronco wins the GT500 race by taking shortcuts, but it gets really interesting after the race. After a stunning aerial view of the track, Patterson and Hall have a conversation in which Patterson says Shelby should do “with that.” The double entendre is obvious when he points to the Bronco. Shelby Hall could do something with Bronco or Shelby American could do something. Patterson responds to Hall by saying that it’s an excellent idea. That’s the end of the discussion.
Shelby American could be making a Shelby Bronco, according to some reports. It’s easy to believe that something is in the works, given the hype surrounding the off-roader and the existence of a Shelby modified F-150. We’ll have to wait and see if there are any more clues to a Shelby Bronco.
