Brakes at the back or for the person behind the wheel?
We have some questions about this particular Ford Mustang. It looks a lot like an S550, but with a surprising array of exterior parts. It looks like it is from Mach 1. The rocker panels, chin, and wheels all appear to be Mach 1. However, the front fascia isn’t Mach 1 and there’s no wing at its back. Camo wrap on the front clip is a mystery. The driver’s side window also has the words “no brakes” written. Weird.
Are you ready to see things get more bizarre? These spy shots show that our sources are quite certain this is a powertrain test mule, especially for all-wheel drive. The evidence is strong. A close inspection of the rear wheel shows a dual-caliper arrangement that you won’t see on regular Mustangs. Similar arrangements can be found on other all-wheel-drive models, such as the Dodge Charger. It is easy to see the janky wiring loom that runs into the rear wheel arch. However, it is less obvious than the other wires that run into the front well.
If Ford was working on an all-wheel drive setup, it would make sense to monitor all four wheels. It’s possible that the brakes might not function at all during testing. These photos were taken from public streets close to Ford’s Dearborn test track. Let’s hope the brakes work. Perhaps that is why the Mustang’s driver wasn’t happy to be photographed.
What does this all mean? This could mean that Ford is testing new braking systems on the Mustang. There are rumors that Ford is testing an all-wheel drive system. This could be a test mule to see if a next generation Mustang V8 hybrid has all-wheel drive. These are all things that Mustang is planning for the future. However, we won’t likely see any of them debut until at most 2022, when the next-generation Mustang V8 hybrid will be available.
