Both setups serve different purposes.
The Ford F-150 Raptor has been completely redesigned for the model year 2021. For a winning formula, the third-generation model features many improvements. The optional tire kit brings the largest tires ever made by the factory in this segment. There are advantages and tradeoffs to both the standard 35-inch tires and the optional 37 inch kit.
MuscleCarsAndTrucks was able to speak with the engineers behind the performance truck, and they discussed the benefits and limitations of the upgraded tire kit. The two options of tires actually serve different purposes, and it becomes clear that it makes perfect sense when you stop to think about it.
Adam Busack, an engineer on the 2021 F-150 Raptor engineering group, stated that both have their advantages. The 35-inch tires offer a little more travel than any Raptor’s ever had. You get a little more ground clearance with the 37-inch tires. The truck is lifted up by the package, making rock crawling easier. Both packages are very comfortable on the road and offer excellent driving dynamics.
MCT says that if you are looking to get off the road quickly, the 35-inchers will be the best set. The upgraded 37-inch tires are better suited for those who want to tackle more difficult obstacles at a slower speed. Both tires are BF Goodrich KO2 tires, measuring 37×12.5R17 and having a C load range. Each tire is approximately 68 pounds (31.1 kilograms) in weight.
Ford modified its own production line in order to fit the new Raptor’s tires. The 37-inch upgrade kit doesn’t just include a set of big tires. Busack stated that a lot of people throw large tires on trucks, and the ride and steering are destroyed. This package was made for Raptors. It is really comprehensive.”
