Ford Mustang Fox Body Notchback Rendering Wants to Bring Back the ’80s

Is the 2020 design language compatible with the notch?

The third generation Ford Mustang is the most desirable of all the Ford Mustang models. The third-generation is the only one that can be styled independently. The retro styling cues are absent from the Fox’s wedge-shaped, angular Fox. This is unless you include the pseudo-side vents, which were part of the Mustang GT ground effects between 1987 and 1993. This is only the GT, however, the LX hatchback and notchback versions have no such thing.

This is partly what makes this rendering so fascinating. It was created by WB.Artist20 via Instagram. However, there is no clear connection to the original pony-car. The iconic side vents and the three-bar vertical taillights are not present, but the scalloped sides are a bit of a throwback. This design combines elements from the current-generation S550 Stang to modernize Fox Body. Inspiration is not limited to any Fox. This creation depicts the infamous notchback, the most foxiest Fox ever to be foxed.

It is a truly unique result. All the pieces are there, to the credit of the artist. The taillights are tall and the C-pillar high, while the front clip features bulky Fox.

The similarities between the original Fox notchback are evident. The modernization of the S550 design is well done.

We wonder, however, if this car is seen in context and without the Mustang badges removed, if anyone would recognize it. It looks a lot like the ’90s Crown Victoria and last-gen Taurus, according to the artist. The Instagram post has many comments that look like a Mitsubishi Evo. Some also think the front looks like a Volvo. Many Motor1.com employees also like the Ford Taurus style with its notched rear and one writer even sees shades of the Chevrolet Cobalt front clip.

Is this a bad rendering? It doesn’t mean that the rendering is bad. The proportions are pleasing and the Fox Body cues can be easily recognized. The anonymity is perhaps due to the fact that the Fox platform , which is loved-it-or hate-it Fox, is quite anonymous. Its flat, edgy 1980 persona may not be enough to keep up with modern automotive trends in 2020 America.
