The new eight-speed automatic uses an electronic rotary controller rather than a conventional looking gearshift.
Ford has updated the 2019 Edge crossover by giving it a fresh look, an updated rear and more power than the base model. The top trim of the range is the new ST trim. This makes the most of the Sport’s power and gives the Edge a more muscular look.
Ford’s 2.0-liter turbocharged four cylinder engine continues to power the 2019 Edge. However, it now produces 250 horsepower (186 kilowatts), which is a 5-hp (4-kW), improvement over last year. Ford promises a better fuel economy with the eight-speed automatic, which adds two additional gears to the driver’s arsenal. Instead of a stick-shaped gearshift, the rotary knob is now available.
The model includes standard driver assistance such as blind-spot monitoring and lane-keep aid.
The Edge also has a new look. The bars of the grille have been redesigned and full LED headlights have been added to the standard. The redesigned hood is more contoured than the flat style currently used. Ford has added a black trim strip to the rear of the hatchback’s window, giving it a visually more interesting, two-tone appearance.
Ford’s first ever use of the ST performance branding on a crossover is for customers looking for more power. The Sport trim still has a 2.7-liter biturbo-V6 engine, but this one produces 335 horsepower (250 kW), and 380 poundfeet (515 Newton meters) of torque. This is in comparison to the 315 hp (335 kW) or 350 lb-ft (475Nm) respectively. All-wheel drive is standard and the eight-speed auto replaces a six-cog unit found in the ST. These upgrades include a revised suspension with more aggressive settings and upgraded brakes on the Blue Oval.
The ST is a bit different from the rest of the lineup. It features mesh in the grille, which echoes the Focus ST’s. A modified rear bumper with dual exhaust outlets and lower side skirts communicate the model’s sporty intents. The seats have thicker bolsters inside.
Ford has not yet revealed pricing and availability for the 2019 Edge. More details will be revealed at the North American International Auto Show, Detroit.
