Four-Cylinder Mercedes-AMG C63 Details Emerge: 4,400 LBS, AWD, 550 HP

For our metric-loving audience, that’s 2,000 kg.

Yesterday’s news was that the next C63 will lose its V8 in favor of an electrified engine with half as many cylinders. However, a new report by Car Magazine provides more details about the much-criticized hybrid powertrain. Mercedes will use the 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine from the AMG A45, but with an electric twist. This is done by adding an integrated starter generator (ISG) to the engine and a rear-mounted electrical motor.

This sounds like the recipe for a heavy car. The new report reveals that the next AMG C63 will likely be similar. It will weigh in at almost 4,409 pounds (2,000 kg), which, if true, would mean it is about 535 lbs (234 kg) heavier than the C63 sedan before options. These numbers are rough estimates, but they will give you an idea of how big the new C63 will look.

There will also be more power (quelle surprise), as the combined output will reach 550 HP (410 kW), and 590lb-ft (890 Nm). The current C63S has 47 horses, but has a peak torque of 74 lbft (100 nm) and has 47 less horses. Although the report doesn’t provide any details on the battery, it will apparently last for 40 miles (64 km) in a best-case scenario.

A perfect 50/50 weight distribution would also be possible after reducing the load on front axle. The four-cylinder engine is about 132 lbs (60kg) lighter than the old, 4.0-liter V8. According to Car Magazine, the hybrid powertrain will transform the next C63 into an AWD performance vehicle while maintaining the tail-happy nature of the standard drift mode.

It will also be three-and-a-half times more fuel efficient, but it won’t be able to do the 0-60 mph (100 km/h), in the claimed 3.5 seconds, or 0.6s faster than the C63 S.

The combustion engine will produce 420 horsepower (313 kW), and the electric motor will send 200 hp to the rear wheels. According to the report, the electric motor will be independent of the nine-speed manual transmission because the 9GTRONIC is not capable of handling the torque at near instant speed.

C63 AMG 4Matic+ EQ Power Sport (yes that’s its true name, but AMG should be before C63) is expected to be unveiled towards the end 2022 before going on sale. The C63 AMG 4Matic+ EQ Power Sport will be available shortly. However, the C63 two-door C63s may not return. Mercedes has recently hinted that it will eliminate some convertibles and coupes. C-Class models are the most vulnerable so there may not be a new C63 with no rear doors.
