To meet high demand, the automaker is increasing its production.
It’s safe for us to say that the latest Chevrolet Corvette model is a success story for GM. The company is struggling to keep up with demand for America’s first sports car, the mid-engine model.
Tony Johnson, director for car and cross-border marketing at Chevrolet made this revelation in an interview with GM Authority. Johnson stated that the automaker is not up to the challenge of meeting unexpected demand.
He stated that “we have more orders than can handle” in the GM Authority interview.
Johnson suggested that there is a significant backlog, even though it was not clear how many. Johnson stated that the automaker is working tirelessly to meet this demand. They even work around-the-clock in order to increase production.
This statement by GM is not surprising. Chevy has been facing numerous production halts and the obvious adverse effects from the coronavirus pandemic. The most recent was the company having to cancel 2021 Corvette C8 orders due to parts shortages. However, this is not connected to the global chip production crisis.
Despite these production problems, numbers continue to be strong for the automaker. Corvette sales increased by more than 20 percent in 2020, compared to 2019.
The automaker’s decision to place the engine behind the seats is, if we take their word for it, clearly a success. Chevy stated that the C8 is more appealing to younger car buyers than its predecessor. However, mid-engine Corvette owners are much wealther then those who bought the old model.
We are not yet able to predict if Chevy can keep up with Corvette owners in the future, with new Corvette models.
