Hear the 2023 Nissan Z Reveal Its 400-Horsepower Twin Turbo V6 Engine

Customers cars could be even more impressive.

The 2023 Nissan Z may not be all that innovative, as it shares the same chassis code (Z34), as the 370Z. However, the VR30DDTT engine is a long-standing feature of Infiniti models. The six-speed manual gearbox, which is similar to the driveshaft, axles and differential, has been borrowed from its predecessor. Is this a detriment to the sport car’s excitement? Not at all.

The redesigned Z may be the last sports car to abandon electrification, as it was built before the advent of the EV era. Enthusiasts should enjoy the sound of an old ICE while they still exist. The twin-turbo 3.0-liter V6 is a delight. We had the chance to hear the prototype in action this week. Let’s listen to the engine sing its song:

It’s not the most exciting V6 note that we have ever heard but Nissan promised us that customer cars would sound better. Although we don’t really know what “better”, in this context, we are keeping our fingers crossed that the exhaust system will produce a louder, more aggressive sound. If that’s not enough to please owners there’s always the aftermarket scene. We’re certain tuners will embrace the new Z with open arms.

The new-for-Z engine produces a healthy 400 horsepower, 350 pound-feet (475 Newton meters) of torque and a significant power boost of 68 HP and 80 lb/ft (108 Nm), over the old 370Z. You can have the V6 with an automatic transmission if you wish (but why would it?). Nissan has created a new nine-speed option ‘box with paddle shifters, sourced from the GT-R.

The Toyota Supra is only available in coupe form, but the mechanically related BMW Z4 convertible is soft-top. Is there a Z Roadster that will take on the Bimmer? Although Nissan has not yet answered the question, it is possible that one will soon. The 2023 Z coupe borrows heavily from the 370Z with its retractable roof.

Rumours of a Z Nismo are already circulating on the World Wide Web. The regular model won’t be available until 2022 so it’s unlikely that a Z Nismo will debut soon. However, rumors are circulating on the World Wide Web about a more powerful model. It will be characterized by an angry exhaust note and the usual upgrades that you would expect from a Nismo-badged model.
