Honda Civic Type R Crate engines will go on sale starting May 1

306 horsepower for $6,790.

Crate engines are often large and expensive. Chevrolet and Ford all offer V8 crate engines with hundreds of horsepower. However, if you’re looking for something smaller and less expensive, we may have the answer.

Honda just announced that it will start selling Civic TypeR crate engines starting May 1, this year. Honda Performance Development will distribute the four-cylinder unit through its new official dealers throughout the country. The availability of the four-cylinder unit is limited so you need to act quickly.

This engine is internally designated K20C1 and has been made available to Honda Racing Line members since its inception. The Japanese automaker will now offer the turbocharged 2.0-liter engine to private customers, for “racing or off-highway” applications.

Honda states that each crate engine will come with an engine longblock, alternator and turbocharger. The Controls Package will include the ECU, engine swap harness and accelerator pedal. Honda claims that the crate engine was designed with ease-of-use and can be fitted into many vehicles.

John Whiteman, a member of the HPD team, says that the new limited-edition package crate engine is part of HPD’s strategy to leverage its pinnacle expertise for Honda fans of all ages.

The K20C1 engine produces between 306 horsepower and 316 horsepower (or 228 and 236 kilowatts, depending on the specification). CarThrottle reports that the K20C1 engine will cost $6,790, with the Controls Package adding $2,210, for a total of $9,000. The public will only be able to purchase 93 units.
