Hongqi L Concept Debuts as Three-Seat Limo with No Steering Wheel

China’s oldest auto manufacturer takes a look at the future.

Hongqi was launched in 1958 and is China’s oldest automotive manufacturer. The brand was initially limited to government officials in high positions, but it was eventually defunct in 1981. FAW Group revived the marque in mid-1990s. It currently sells six models to Chinese customers.

Hongqi took a look at the future during the Auto Shanghai 2020. Although we don’t have much information, different sources from People’s Republic claim that the futuristic sedan concept will be made into a production vehicle in 2023. It’s unknown if the prototype’s flashy front ends will be included in the production model.

L-Concept is a sedan/liftback that has a sloped roofline, and an appearance somewhat similar to a coupe. The body comes in two colors and has a white roof. This transforms into a unique diamond-pattern cover at back, replacing the traditional rear window.

Inside the cabin, the situation is even more interesting. There’s a three-seat configuration with one seat at the front and two at the back. We can see that there is no passenger seat in the front. This allows the rear seat to be positioned more comfortably.

The chandelier that hangs between the rear seats is another interior feature worth mentioning. It joins the cabin’s shiny trim and numerous LED lights to create an edgy atmosphere. However, the two-tone leather upholstery is spot on. The concept does not have a steering wheel, suggesting that it is an autonomous driving system.
