In a straight-line race across the asphalt, the legends of the 1990s will face off.
People who were young enough to become car enthusiasts in the 1990s will be aware that two Japanese cars are available in Europe that are linked to the WRC: the Subaru Impreza P1 Subaru Lancer Evolution VI Tommi Makinen Edition and the Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution VI Tommi Makinen Edition.
These two legendary drivers of the 1990s, just like their rivals Tommi Makinen and Colin McRae, are outstanding units. They’re back on the drag strip thanks to UK’s Carwow.
Both cars are nearly equal in power, but have vastly different powertrains. Which car do you think is quicker in straight-line racing?
Let’s start with the numbers. Prodrive has only produced 1,000 copies of the Subaru Impreza commissioned product. This 922nd unit has a turbocharged turbocharged 2.0-liter engine. It produces 276 horsepower (206 Kilowatts) as well as 260 pound-feet (353 Nms) of torque.
The Mitsubishi Evolution VI Tommi Makinen Edition, powered by a turbo 2.0 liter engine, is also powered by an inline four. The engine also produces 276 horsepower, but has a slightly higher torque at 275 lb-ft (373 Nm). Although beat it, we give it a pass as the Toyota GR Yaris was a newer car.
The Impreza P1 is both blue and has roots from rally racing. It has a slight weight advantage over the Evo VI. The Impreza P1 is 170 pounds lighter (77 kgs), which could help offset the Mitsubishi’s torque advantage.
The biggest challenge in this race, however, was the driver’s skills and the fact that both cars have a manual gearbox. Which car do you think was the winner? Check out the video above and comment below.
