It finally happened: Someone landed an ill-advised drawbridge jump

Did God send the driver to a mission?

It’s something you’ve seen in movies. It’s on TV. It’s possible to see it on television. We don’t mean a fake drawbridge jump. This is a full-on, crazy drawbridge jump that’s not just for the cameras, nor the crowds.

It’s 2021, and cameras are everywhere. This is especially true for high-traffic areas and sensitive infrastructure like drawbridges. This means that this daredevil driver is getting all sorts of attention, regardless of whether it was intended.

The jump took place in Daytona Beach on April 12, specifically at the Main Street bridge that spans the Halifax River. A second-generation Hyundai Sa Fe smashes through the lower crossing gate and then takes in some air as the bridge rises. Although it’s not as dramatic as the famous drawbridge scene in the classic movie The Blues Brothers, the Hyundai is not a diety-blessed Dodge sedan equipped with a cop motor or tires.

The Santa Fe did not make it to the jump unharmed. The windshield was smashed by the crossing barrier, and Wesh 2 reported that the crossing barrier on the opposite side of the bridge had also been removed. The SUV is not in perfect condition. Pause the video to see the damage to the hood that was not caused by the crossing barrier. The driver’s side of the SUV is also unlatched and covered in ripped body panels. It looks like a beater, and one might use it to jump over a drawbridge.Unfortunately, little else is known about the driver other than police apparently know who it is. Amazingly, the person appears to be using a cell phone during the jump, so yeah, we’re left with more questions than answers on this video. Adventure seeker? Lawbreaker? Whatever the case, just stay safe out there people. And for crying out loud – don’t try jumping drawbridges. It’s amazing we even have to say that.
