It may just happen.
While we’ve shared plenty of spy photos with Jaguar’s mild upgrade for its F-Type, it’s possible that the stunning coupe could see some major changes. Rumors suggest that the model’s next generation will switch to a mid engine layout, similar to how the Chevy Corvette moved the powertrain behind its seats.
A report by Autocar last month suggests that some design elements from the CX75 could be adapted to the new F-Type. Ian Callum, Jaguar’s former designer, described the 2010 concept as “the one that got away”. However, it seems like the new F-Type could still carry the elegant lines of the car in the James Bond movie Spectre (2015).
F-Type’s Future Looks Interesting, No Matter What It Is:
Motor1.com created this week’s rendering. It features the complete transformation of the F1_, including the mid-engine layout, strong design influences from C-X75. Although it is uncertain whether the digital design exercise will be realized, we are hopeful that it will. The car is absolutely stunning. Jaguar is currently working on a subtle facelift to the current car. This means that the next-generation model will not be coming anytime soon. We don’t expect it in the next three or four years.
According to the rumor mill, the British automaker isn’t sure if it will stick with the current formula, or move the engine to the back. However, they are reportedly favoring the switch from a mid-engine configuration with an electrified motor. Talks of going completely electric are also being discussed, although it is too early to predict the future direction Jaguar’s 911 rival.
The F-Type’s revised front-engined F-Type will come out in 2020. It might also get a BMW motor for its flagship SVR variant. This engine could replace Jaguar’s supercharged 5.0-liter V8.
