However, “Limited Lease Sales” are being planned.
Honda revealed that it had received the type designation required for Level 3 automated driving in Japan. The approval allows the company’s Level 3 autonomous-driving systems to be sold in Japan. Honda took just four months to prepare the 2021 Legend with the tech for public sale.
The Honda Legend EX will now be available in Japan for lease. It includes the Honda Sensing Elite. Semi-autonomous driving technology upgrades the Honda Sensing family, which is available on models made in the United States and Europe.
The Traffic Jam Pilot is the main feature of Elite’s system. It takes complete control of the car in bumper-to-bumper traffic situations. Honda claims that this function provides smooth and high-quality driving in congested traffic conditions.
The system relies on high-definition three-dimensional maps and several external sensors to detect the vehicle’s 360 degree surroundings. A camera monitors the “conditions” of the driver inside the cabin.
Traffic Jam Pilot was developed using simulations of around 10 million possible real-world scenarios. The system was also tested on vehicles equipped for the task for approximately 800,000. Miles (1.3 million kilometers).
The Japanese automaker is now the first to offer Level 3 autonomous driving technology in a production vehicle with the Honda Sensing Elite on the 2021 Legend. The offering is currently only available in Japan, and Honda states that it intends to only sell “limited leases.”
