Jayco Moves Overlanding with a New Sprinter-Based Terrain Camping Van

It is compact and well-equipped but will come at a cost.

Jayco is a name you may have heard of even if you have never camped in your entire life. Jayco, an Indiana-based RV manufacturer, is well-known for its large range of motorhomes as well as travel trailers. But this van is something else. This camper is technically a Class B motorhome. It trades campsites and RV parks for offroad adventures. The 2022 Jayco Terrain is here!

Jayco’s venture into the outlanding realm begins with a proven Mercedes-Benz Sprinter2500 4×4 with an 144-inch wheelbase. Jayco supplies everything you need for long trips off the beaten track, including a cassette toilet and a bathroom with a bathtub. A small sink, an induction stove and a small refrigerator are part of the kitchen. For extra counter space, a pullout table extends from the side door. The second row of seats has a flip-up table. With the front seat facing rearward, it creates an inviting lounge/dining space.

The van’s only bed is located at the rear. The van’s only bed is a powered double-decker that can be deployed above a large garage. You can use all manner of mounts to secure cargo. The Terrain’s upper backside also has fiberglass side pods, which add a few inches more width. The power source is a 48V -210AH lithium battery with a 3,500-watt Inverter. It’s also charged by a dedicated 48 volt alternator and 200 watts of solar cells on the roof. Jayco does not provide information about fresh or grey water tank sizes. However, the fresh tank can be mounted inside.

Living off-grid can be one thing. But getting there is quite another. The Terrain’s mandatory Customer Service Package includes Koni shocks as well as a heavy-duty rear stabilizer bars. The Terrain’s mandatory Customer Value Package also includes a sturdy roof rack, patio awning, exterior LED lighting and a 48V air conditioner. It also comes with a set all-terrain tires on aluminum wheels. Standard equipment includes an onboard air compressor.

It is a more convenient option than a self-built camper. However, it does come with a cost. Jayco states that the Terrain ‘s pricing starts at $192,000.
