It is officially recognized.
Mazda just released an official press release confirming that it will cease production of two core models following the 2021 model-year. The brand is proud of the “performance, design, quality and safety they contributed to Mazda”, but the Mazda6 and Mazda6 will not be available for the 2022 model years.
Mazda explains that it is responding to changing consumer demand and wants to continue delivering “beautifully-designed vehicles that are fun for driving.” It’s too early to know if Mazda will introduce direct replacements.
The 2012 Los Angeles Auto Show introduced the Mazda6. Sales began in January 2013. The 2018 model year saw a major facelift to the sedan’s exterior and interior. Sales began in January 2013. The facelift did not generate the anticipated demand. There were only 31,000 sales in 2018, which is far below 2015’s model year with 57.898 US deliveries.
The CX3 crossover was introduced in North America as a new model for the 2016 model-year. The model range was simplified for 2020 by dropping the Touring or Grand Touring trims. Mazda added standard equipment such as Apple Carplay, Android Auto and Apple Carplay to the CX-3, but it wasn’t enough for it to be last in Consumer Reports annual satisfaction survey 2021.
We won’t be surprised to see the Mazda6 next-generation model return to the United States, given the rumors about its new RWD platform. We will need to wait at most a few months for more information about Mazda’s plans regarding the CX-3, 6 and 8.
