The new widowmaker
The GT was a high-performance coupe with 456 horsepower when it was introduced by Mercedes-AMG in 2015. The output grew as hotter derivatives were introduced, culminating in the 720-hp Black Series last year. For extra low-end torque, the range-topper changed the crank of the 4.0-liter from a cross-plane design to a flat-plane and added turbochargers.
A lesser upgrade program increases output to a Bugatti V0_-matched 1,001 horsepower, while more affordable entry-level packages offer 920 and 825 horsepower. This program is a software remap of the V8, but the others include modified turbochargers and forged pistons as well as beefier connecting rods and a custom fuel system. To handle the extra power, the seven-speed dual-clutch auto transmission is also strengthened.
The exhaust system is also bespoke, eliminating the particulate filter. It is not legal to drive in Europe, but it can be used on tracks outside the Old Continent. You can choose to have a more raucous sound or to use the standard setup with an electronic flap control system that will alter the V8’s noise remotely. The changes include ultra-light wheels and aero enhancements.
The tuner can electronically limit torque to a minimum level for maximum traction and long-lasting drivetrain life if you are concerned that this power might be too much for an RWD car. Opus also mentions that the V8 produces immense power in a linear manner similar to a naturally-aspirated engine.
The Binary Editions of the tuner’s beefed-up Black Series will be available. They will include the 1,001 and 1,111 horsepower models. The performance kits with 825 HP and 920 HP will be available in the meantime.
