Mercedes-AMG GT63 S E Performance Revealed – An 831-HP Plug-In Hybrid

It is the most powerful AMG yet.

The Mercedes AMG GT 4-Door range is already difficult enough. Today, the brand adds another model to the lineup. This is the – deep breathe Mercedes-AMG GT63 S E Performance. This is Mercedes-AMG’s first plug-in hybrid and it’s undoubtedly the first.

What does the new PHEV-AMG have to offer? There is power, lots of it. This car has a mind-bending 831 horsepower (620 Kilowatts) and 1,033 pounds-feet (1.400 newton meters) of torque thanks to a twin-turbocharged, 4.0-liter V8 and a 6.1-kilowatt hour battery pack. This is the most powerful Mercedes AMG factory product.

To create the lightweight, powerful battery pack, the Affalterbach engineering team worked closely with the UK Mercedes-AMG Formula 1 engine workshop. The battery weighs in at 196 pounds (89 kg) and generates 204 horsepower (152 kW) by itself. The GT 63’s electric driving range is 7.5 miles (12 kilometers) due to the fact that the battery pack serves power rather than range.

The GT 63 can reach speeds of 62 mph in 2.9 seconds. This is faster than the GT Black Series Coupe’s 3.1 seconds. The four-door can reach 124 mph in less than 10 seconds – a second-shy GT Black Series – and if the road is clear (read: Autobahn), then the GT 63 S E Performance can go up to 196 mph (315 kmh).

The new Electric drive mode joins the GT 53 models Comfort, Sport, Sport Plus and Race. It allows the S E Performance, which is powered entirely by battery power, to cruise at speeds up to 81 mph (130 kmh). There are four stages of regenerative brake system, with one-pedal driving and a track-only mode.

AMG Ride Control plus is available on the GT 63 E Performance, as well as all other AMG GT 4 Door models. It includes adaptive suspension with an air damping and an air spring system. Mercedes claims that the suspension settings can be individually adjusted from the drive modes or automatically adjusted depending on which mode.

The S E Performance model is visually similar to the GT 63. However, there are some new visuals. The GT coupe’s front bumper borrows some cues. The charging port, located at the rear bumper, blends in with the sheet metal below the taillights. There are also new 20- and 21 inch wheel options. Similarities can also be found in the cabin. The MBUX infotainment system from all GT models is still available, as well as the two-spoke steering wheels with haptic feedback.

Mercedes-AMG has yet to announce the price. The GT 43 4-Door is currently priced at $89,900 in America, while the GT 53 starts at $99,950. The GT 63 costs $140,600, or $161,900 for 63 S. So, a MSRP of almost $200,000 is possible.

Next week, the Mercedes-AMG GT 63 S E Performance will be presented in person at the IAA Show Munich. It will then go on sale in Europe later in the year.
