Mercedes Concept EQG Makes its Munich debut with Electric G-Class Style

This is a prototype of the future EQG offroader.

It is finally here. Mercedes-Benz continues to push for electrification, and its iconic G-Class model is no exception. Although the vehicle you see is not the same one that you will be able buy in the future it is close. Mercedes calls this Concept EQG – a near-production model of the forthcoming EQG, and a vision for an electrified G-Class.

It looks just like a G Class, and true purists will love the fact that it should be as tough. The boxy body is still supported by a ladder frame, which rides on an independent suspension at the front and a solid axle at its rear. The greenhouse is tall and the spare tire carrier at the rear holds its place. Door handles are prominent on both sides. Round headlights highlight the way ahead. This is a G-Class, even at a glance.

However, it’s clearly a distinct G Class. The bold G-Class grille is transformed into an illuminated Black Panel Grille with the Concept EQG, even without an engine. The fake grille looks like a grille, thanks to the illumination of the blue squares. In the middle is a three-pointed star that lights up in 3D. The grille facade is completed by a white border and more LED daytime lights around the headlights.

Additional LED lighting will be found on the sides of the Concept EQG’s protective strips. Flat roofs include an LED light bar at front and a third brake lamp at the back. The corners are adorned with late-90s-inspired 22-inch wheels. You will also notice that the Concept EQG has a rear spare tire carrier. It’s actually an external storage box which pays homage the the traditional G-Class in look, but exchanges the tire for items like charging cables.

What does the Concept EQG do to put power on the ground? Mercedes has yet to reveal details about the concept’s horsepower and range, but we are told that it uses four electric motors located close to the wheels. The EQG can have different motors that can be operated independently, giving it “unique driving characteristics.” A shiftable two-speed gearbox is also included in the driveline. This gives you a crawler mode for off-road situations.

The EQG is a concept that is in the early stages of production. There will be changes to it before it becomes an official product. Mercedes promises that the EQG will be able to pass all tests and conquer the same terrain that the G-Wagens before it. However, there is no timeline.
