Mercedes EQS meets S-Class in Electric Versus Petrol Drag Racing

Luxury of the past versus luxury of the future

The Mercedes-Benz EQS, which is actually the first ever, is a true stunner. It is stunning not only because of how it looks but also because of the technology that it conceals beneath the skin. It is equipped with the most powerful production electric vehicle battery pack on the market, and depending on its configuration, it can be quite powerful. But can that be enough to compete with the luxury brand’s king? Let’s see.

Carwow now has a video on Youtube that finally shows a drag-race between the S Class and the EQS. Although it was not easy for our British colleagues to choose the most powerful version, this gives us an opportunity to compare the more affordable versions.

This video shows the EQS with a single electric motor. It powers the rear wheels and produces 330 horsepower (243 Kilowatts) as well as 420 pound-feet (597 Newton-meters). It’s a good power output for such a large, luxurious sedan. However, it’s still quite heavy at almost 2.5 tons.

The S-Class uses a 3.0-liter turbocharged gasoline engine, augmented by a 48-volt hybrid for a combined power output of 435 horsepower (320 kW) and 383 lb-ft (382 Nm) of twist. The car is 2,065 kg (2,522 pounds) and weighs in at 4,552 lbs (9.8kg). The EQS is the more affordable of these two vehicles.

You now have the numbers. Which car is faster off the line? We think you may be able to guess the answer by simply looking at the numbers, but it is different when the cars move. The brake test is equally epic.
