The absolute flagship is a discrete entry.
Although the Mercedes-AMG Mercedes-AMG-S65 is dead, one-percenters need not fret. The Maybach model will still have its V12 engine. In the lead-up of the world premieres of the normal Benz S-Class sedan, the Bentley W12-rivaling sedan had been announced last year. A teaser last months has finally revealed that the twelve-cylinder luxury cocoon.
The car appears to be quite quiet on Daimler’s media website. The extra-long luxobarge features the same style and lots of chrome as the HTML8 model, but with elegant multi-spoke wheels.
Here’s everything you need to know about the Maybach announcement. The S680’s major upgrade is the twin-turbocharged, 6.0-liter V12 engine. It produces 621 horsepower (463 Kilowatts) as well as a strong 738 pound-feet (1,098 Newton-meters). It should sound familiar. Although the mill is a direct carryover from the Maybach S650’s previous generation, the US output is much higher than that previously discovered from Merc’s Russian S680 configurator. Although the luxury sedan can reach 60 mph in just 4.4 seconds, its top speed electronically is limited to 130 mph.
Mercedes’ 4Matic all wheel-drive system routes power to all four wheels for the first time, with the V12 range-topping engine. The S680 has 69 percent power going to the rear wheels, with the remainder being distributed to the front by a nine speed automatic transmission. The V12 flagship also features rear steering, just like the S580. This allows the 18-foot long vehicle to maneuver in tight spaces.
Visually, there are subtle differences between the Maybach S-Class and this one. The trunk lid has a “S680”, logo, and the front fenders are adorned with “V12” badges. It will surprise some to learn that the Maybach S650 model has had its model designation used previously. The S680 logo was placed on the trunk lid and the Maybach S650 model was exported to China with the S680 badge after the 2017 facelift.
Mercedes has yet to disclose all details about the S680 to US buyers. We are not yet able to reveal the vehicle weight or fuel economy, but we doubt that buyers of this level are interested in such details. They will also be interested in the price, although it hasn’t been publicly disclosed. We will be hearing more about the S680’s US on-sale date, which is expected to occur in the first half 2022.
