Mercedes Unimog and G-Class Show Off Their Off-Road Chops

14 minutes of your time is well spent.

The Mercedes G-Class celebrates its 40th anniversary in 2019. The G-Class is as luxurious as one would expect from a car with the three-pointed star badge, but it can also be driven off-road if you want. Mercedes claims the G is capable of going “virtually everywhere” with its low-range locking differentials that lock at 100 percent and slope climbing capabilities up to 100%.

As for the UNIversal-MOtor-Gerat (the latter German word means machine/device/instrument), it’s still the fully fledged workhorse it has been since day one. The Unimog is much older than the G-Class. Its origins can be traced back to 1946, when the first prototype was made. The Unimog was twice as fast than the average agricultural vehicle at that time and had AWD with front and rear locking differentials. This allowed for serious off-roading capabilities. It was very well received and was eventually made into a series of production.

In June 1951, the production was moved from Maschinenfabrik Boehringer, Goppingen, to the Daimler-Benz truck factory in Gaggenau. The Unimog 25 was dubbed the first Unimog. It had 25 horsepower while the Unimog S, which was launched in 1955, had 80 horsepower. This engine was a (thirsty), six-cylinder 2.2-liter unit also found in the 220 S luxury sedan.

The Unimog was first built in 2003 and assembled at Worth’s largest truck assembly facility in 2002. The Unimog S, as mentioned above, is still the most loved version of this vehicle.

The Unimog and G-Class joined forces to create a promotional video that showcases the legendary off-roaders’ ability to conquer difficult terrain. Enjoy the show, then relax and sit back.
