MF Ghost is the Initial D Sequel to Toyota GT86 Racing Ferraris

MF Ghost is set in a future when most people drive their own cars.

The manga and anime series InitialD played a major role in popularizing drifting across North America in 2000. It is likely that it was a key reason why the AE86 Toyota Corolla GT-S coupe has gained so much value. The sequel MF Ghost has arrived on screens. The above teaser gives a glimpse of the animated series that will premiere in 2023.

MF Phantom changes the setting of the story to the near future in 202X. In Japan, autonomous cars are the norm. However, only a few people drive their own vehicles. The driver Kanata Rivington, a from Britain , graduates and then returns to Japan. While he drives a red Toyota GT86 against various vehicles including Lamborghini and Ferrari, drones follow him.

The promo text states that the animators of this animated series are recording each vehicle’s actual sound to ensure the correct audio. The cars are CG like in Initial. However, there is more style to them thanks to the better technology of the early 2000s. You can see lines that are more reminiscent of hand-drawn animation.

Although it’s too early to draw any conclusions, the teaser does look fun. It is unclear how the writer will justify a GT86 beating a Lamborghini, Ferrari or Lamborghini in a race.

We don’t think MF Ghost will have the same cultural impact on American car enthusiasts as InitialD. This might bring back some nostalgia, but it may also tell a new story.

Since 2017, an MF ghost manga has been in operation. On January 6, 2022, the 13th volume was published. Even though the official English translation is not yet available in the US, it will soon.
