It is not clear if this sustainable model will inspire future Minis.
The original Mini was designed by Sir Alec Issigonis in the 1950s. It is one of the most iconic automotive designs. Today we focus more on the driving experience of the original Austin and Morris Minis and their impact on motorsport. They were designed by Issigonis in response to the Suez Crisis, rising fuel prices in the UK and the need for a simpler, more efficient vehicle that could hold four people and their bags.
Resurrected BMW-owned mini has largely adopted the sporty perception of its history at the expense its minimalist, efficient past. The Mini Strip is an exclusive collaboration between Anglo-Teutonic and British fashion pioneer Paul Smith. It’s a long-awaited return to Issigonis’ original Mini idea, but with modern sustainability.
The all electric Cooper SE is the basis of the Strip. It has no paint. There’s a thin veneer that covers the galvanized steel body to prevent corrosion. However, this car was not painted at Mini’s Oxford factory in England. The new grille is more aerodynamic than the original Issigonis design. Designers also created the wheel covers to reduce drag. These details make it a pleasing combination of style and efficiency.
Mini and Smith had a unique approach to the bare car. Rather than hiding certain parts of the manufacturing process they highlighted them. The exposed bolts were allegedly displayed to show how the car can be dismantled at the end.
Except for the dash, there is no trim piece, but the exposed parts of the structure are a striking shade of blue. Although 3D printing was a key part of the interior design, fashion enthusiasts will be able to appreciate Smith’s signature stripes. The primary touchpoints are made up of sustainable materials such as recyclable cork and knitted material. Mini has updated its iconic center speedometer, keeping in mind the past. Mini’s new display is not environmentally harmful, but a simple holster to hold a smartphone.
