The name debate continues to rage.

Ford made waves this week with the unveiling of the Mustang Mach1_, the company’s four-door, all-electric crossover. Many feel that the Mustang model does not deserve the famous nameplate, despite the pony badge and tri-bar taillights. As Mustang enthusiasts reconcile with the new Mustang, the debate has been heated online and offline. Yesterday, Steve Prewitt , President of Mustang Club of America, took to Facebook to endorse the Mach E and to quell fears about the future of this iconic pony car.

Prewitt stated that Ford did an “astonishing job” in checking all the necessary items and offered “an impressive portfolio performance specifications.” Prewitt compared the Mach-E to a new member of the Mustang family, such as the Boss 302, Mustang II or the Fox Body. Prewitt also said he understands Mustang enthusiasts and that not all will accept the Mach-E.

Ford is doing everything it can to make Mach-E feel like Mustang. Exterior styling borrows from Mustang styling cues and incorporates sheetmetal and athletic styling. Ford’s Mach-E GT can reach 60 mph in 3.5 seconds and has a range performance specifications. It produces 342-kilowatts (359-horsepower) of power. The Mach-E can travel between 210 and 300 miles depending on the trim, powertrain configuration, and drive type.

Ford is focused on the future and electric cars are its future. Ford was looking at a boring compliance vehicle without personality. Ford had to make an EV with a Mustang name. Even after the model is released to the public, the Mustang name will continue to be debated. Will Mustang enthusiasts embrace the brand’s expansion into four-door family cars? We will only know the outcome when it is ready.
