We are trying to look into the future Opel’s redesigned SUV lineup.
Crossovers and SUVs can be a license to print money for most automakers. Opel is well aware of this trend, as it recently added the Crossland X to its portfolio and the Grandland X. The Russelsheim-based marque is also updating its older namesplates. Spy shots (attached to below) show that work is underway for a new generation Mokka X (Buick Encore) in the U.S.
Our vision of the Monza X flagship SUV is part of our digital effort to see the future of the urban-oriented Adam X, Mokka X, and Mokka X. The latter may not be realized as Opel’s new owners, the PSA Group is making changes to its lineup. However, our latest intel suggests that a larger SUV has been delayed.
We won’t be surprised if the Monza X gets the green light. It will likely ride on a PSA developed platform (EMP2) instead of borrowing architecture from the Insignia a.k.a. Buick Regal. The French automobile conglomerate, Opels and Vauxhalls, has already stated that all Opels will be using PSA underpinnings starting in 2024. However, there are chances that some models will transition to French hardware earlier than expected.
The Crossland X , and the Grandland X are already Peugeots under their skins (3008 & 5008, respectively), giving a glimpse of what’s ahead. Some models that were under development at the time the PSA tookover may have some GM/Opel parts. However, the new models will make use of existing hardware from Peugeot or Citroen to reduce costs and speed up development.
The switch to PSA parts doesn’t mean Opel cars will just place the lightning logo where the double chevron and lion badges would normally be. Opel’s designers will try to distinguish the cars between brands. These digital exercises are based on the Crossland X, Grandland X which look very different from the French SUVs they were based upon.
PSA is still not sure what strategy it will use to revive Opel and its British counterpart. However, the extended family has the potential to make better cars for customers.
