New Volkswagen Golf R Hits GPS-Verified 172 MPH On German Autobahn

Hot-hatch happens quickly

The standard Volkswagen Golf is not coming to the US. We’ll be content with the modified Golf GTI or GolfR. However, the former is more interesting. VW transformed the model’s eighth-generation 2022 Golf R into an impressive performance machine that can take to the German Autobahn. The hot-hatch’s speed is demonstrated in a new video.

According to the speedometer, the hatchback can travel an astonishing 180 mph (289 km/h) on the Automann-TV YouTube channel. The GPS-verified top speed was slightly lower at 172 mph (277 km/h). The Golf R comes with the Performance Package, which increases its top speed from the standard electronically limited 155mph (250 kmph) to an impressive 167mph (270 kmph).

This shows that the car hits it in 4.51 seconds. This is faster than the VW claimed 4.7 second time. This number drops to 4.33 seconds after the rollout. The driver also notes that the R’s speed of 172 mph is electronically limited and suggests that there may be more fuel left. This wouldn’t surprise VW, who may have underestimated the Golf R’s output.
