A very rare Mercedes-Benz 300 SL By AMG Mercedes-Benz 300 SL will be up for sale at RM Auctions in Monaco in May.
AMG began work on the 300 SL after a Brunei sultan asked to install modern internals in a gullwing coupe or a roadster. AMG also received nine additional orders between 1996 and 2009. AMG has since re-built eleven of the original 300SLs (8 gullwings, 3 roadsters) and restomodified them all. A 1954 gullwing chassis number 198040 is up for grabs at RM Auctions. It will go under the hammer this May in Monaco.
AMG retained the 300 SL’s chassis and body, but removed the straight-six engine to install a V8 6.0-liter engine. It produced 380 bhp (283 kW), and 427 lbft (578 Nm). A five-link rear suspension was installed, along with Bilstein shocks. Additional upgrades include a four speed automatic transmission, disc brakes, and power steering.
The interior of the 300 SL includes Nappa leather upholstery with Alcantara trim, and a HWA steering column. AMG also installed protective panels made of carbon fiber and a Sony-branded CD player. Affalterbach engineers added an electronic display to the original 300 SL instruments.
