Why It Matters Now:
The Mille Miglia Coupe was a futuristic concept car that had a retro twist. It featured a curvaceous body covered in aluminum and carbon fiber, which evoked the spirit from the 1940s racing scene.
Chris Bangle was the designer of the BMW Mille Miglia Coupe at the time. Inspiration came from the iconic 328 Mille Miglia Touring Coupe. It still holds the record for the fastest average speed during the original Mille Miglia. The race car was driven by Huschke von Hannoverstein and Walter Baumer in Germany, who managed an impressive average speed of 103 mph (166mph) during the 1940 Mille Miglia race.
Let’s take a look beneath the retro-modern skin now that we have the background of the concept. BMW was used as the foundation for the Z4 M Coupe, which was introduced that year. The 3.2-liter straight-six engine produced a hefty 343 horsepower. It was shared with the E46 M3 (E46). Engineers tweaked the exhaust to improve the audio experience.
Although the design was inspired by the 1936 race car, it was definitely modernized by mid-2000 standards. The Mille Miglia Coupe, with its CFRP body and those circular LED headlights created a beautiful blend between BMWs from yesteryear as well as next-generation models.
The concept’s roof was particularly highlighted. A hinged hardtop that links the coupe and the 328 roadster was an attractive option. It is similar to how the Z4 M was both roadster AND coupe .
The Mille Miglia Coupe was created as a tribute to the vintage race car. It was not intended to be a car but a stunning concept car.
