BMW has revealed the Z4 sDrive35is M Sports Package. The engine’s power and torque was increased, and the looks were made sportier.
BMW might not be planning an M edition the new HTML4, but that hasn’t stopped the Bavarians providing their fans with this high-performance, range-topping sDrive35is model. The car was a double treat for BMW enthusiasts who longed for the return to the “is” badge. The engine bay has been upgraded, but so are the interior and exterior appointments.
Standard M Sports Packages include a front bumper that has a distinctive M look, outer air intakes in matt aluminumm (18-inch optional), and rear bumpers with special accentuated surrounds for the tailpipes. The car’s status is indicated by the exhaust note.
The adjustable suspension can be lowered by 10 millimetres, providing a balance between sporty look and comfort.
The Z4 sDrive35is is extra special thanks to an upgraded engine system. Its power has been increased from 225kW (306hp), to 250kW (340hp), available at 5,800rpm. US customers will be limited to 246kW (335hp) however. The torque has been increased from 400Nm up to 450Nm (332lb-ft), between 1,400 and 4,500rpm in normal driving conditions. It can be increased to 500Nm by using an overboost function (369 lbft).
Launch Control allows it to sprint from 0 to 100 km/h in just 4.8 seconds, and then stop at 250 km/h (155mph) acceleration. It uses the same 7-speed double-clutch transmission as the normal sDrive35i. The average fuel consumption is 9.0 litres/100 km (equal to 26.1 MPG US), while the corresponding C02 emissions of 210g/km are 210g/km.
This was possible by tweaking the 3.0-litre twin turbo unit of the incumbent. These actions included increasing boost pressure and optimising air supply. Two small turbos made of special steel can withstand temperatures up to 1,000 degrees C (1,830 degrees F) and have low inertia.
The interior includes M entry strips, a gearlever knob and aluminium carbon. There are six exterior colors available, but no matter what color a buyer chooses, the side mirrors will always be in Oxide Silver.
BMW will unveil the Z4 sDrive35is next month at the North American International Auto Show, Detroit. The launch for the US and European markets is scheduled for spring. The M Sports Package will be available on all Z4 models.
