2012 Mercedes SLK teased – Features an electrochromic roof
Mercedes announced that the 2012 SLK will feature an optional electrochromic roof called Magic Sky Control. Customers can dim the top glass panel within seconds using a switch on the overhead console.

Mercedes has released the first teaser photos of the 2012.

The company did not provide any details about the car but announced that it would have an optional electrochromic roof called Magic Sky Control.

Customers can quickly darken the top panel of the glass by placing an order via an overhead console switch. Mercedes explains that the operating principle is based upon the physics of an electric plate condenser. If the glass structure is exposed to an electrical voltage, the particles in the structure will position themselves so that light can pass through it. The particles will position themselves randomly if the voltage is not switched on. This blocks some of the light and keeps the glass dark.

The roof also blocks ultraviolet and infrared radiation, which keeps cabin components (shifter/armrest, etc.) at a temperature of 10 degrees Celsius (50° Fahrenheit).
