This news comes from Mr. Ludwig Willisch, President of BMW North America. He confirmed it at a recent event.
There have been rumors for months about the powertrain to be used in the next-generation BMW M3 (F80), and M4 (F82) models. But now, it seems that the mystery has been solved.
According to Mr. Ludwig Willisch (President of BMW North America), the new generation BMW M3/M4 will include an inline six-cylinder engine unit, and not a V configuration as previously reported.
BimmerPost reports, “Mr. Willisch stated that a V6 configuration had been considered previously (including whether a motor based upon the current M3’s S65 engine minus 2 cylinders was suitable), but was ultimately rejected.”
The outgoing model was equipped with a 4.0-liter V8. This new unit will replace it. The new unit will be around 3.0-liters in displacement and will use twin-turbo/tri-turbo technology to produce a final output of approximately 450 PS (331kW / 444 BHP).
The new generation will also include the M4 Coupe, convertible and M3-inspired bodystyles. BMW’s new naming strategy will also include the M2 and 2-series models.
According to rumors, the new BMW M3 may be revealed in the second half of 2013 or the first part of 2014.
