2014 BMW M3 V6 rumors are back with more details
InsideLine reports that BMW is working on a new V6 engine to power the new M3 when the product hits the market in 2014.

According to InsideLine BMW has developed a new V6 engine to power the M3 when it goes on sale in 2014. This is a surprising development considering BMW has never made a V6-powered model in its long and distinguished history. The M3 will switch to a V configuration, marking the M3’s first move away from high-revving naturally aspirated units to turbocharged models. This is another significant change in BMW’s engineering philosophy over the last few years.

Due to packaging and balance issues, the engine chosen was not the inline-6. It will be powered by two twin-scroll turbochargers. The engine will likely have a displacement 3.0-liters. Its power output will be 429hp (435kW/435PS) & 548Nm (405 Lb-ft) respectively.

The next generation M3 will be 3.7 inches longer than its E90 predecessor. However, it will lose a few pounds (75 lbs / 34 kg) because of the lightweight aluminum materials that are used in the chassis.

F80 will be the new codename for the M3’s next generation. This is also stated in the report. The M4 Coupe and Convertible will also be called F82. They are expected to get the same power unit that their M3 sibling.
