The limited-run R8 supercar will be unveiled in Los Angeles this month. Its full-LED headlights are fitted with a laser high beam.
A few years ago, Audi and BMW were in a race to produce the first car with laser lights. Audi launched the HTML8 LMX special Edition, but BMW won the race by being the first to offer the plug-in hybrid i8 with laser tech. Due to the intense laser beams that exceeded the legal 150,000 candelas allowed in the US, the two cars did not make it to the United States.
Audi’s U.S.-bound R8 Plus Exclusive Edition is now available. It features full-LED headlights and a laser high-beam module in each cluster. It is not only the first Audi model to use laser technology in the U.S. but also the first Audi car to incorporate laser light and sweeping front turn signals indicators. To aid the LED high beam and improve visibility, the laser beam will be activated at speeds at least 40 mph (64 km/h).
The new R8 special edition not only benefits from laser tech but also includes a variety of fineties from the Audi Exclusive catalogue. The package includes a full leather package with a two-tone orange and black scheme, illuminated doors sills with carbon matte finishes, and Alcantara headliner. The only option is to have it available with Quantum Gray paint and a carbon sideblade with an orange stripe.
The 2017 Audi R8 V10 Plus Special Edition will be fitted with 20-inch high-gloss Anthracite wheels and standard carbon ceramic brakes. The supercar is based on the Plus model and will feature carbon fiber on the front lip spoiler as well as the side mirror caps, rear diffuser, rear diffuser, and the wings.
Production is limited to 25 units. Each unit will start at $229,200 and excludes the $1,250 destination fee. A regular 2017MYR8 V10 Plus starts at $189,000.
The new special edition Audi will be on display at the Los Angeles Auto Show in the latter part of the month.
