Chevy has improved the efficiency of the air intake system on the 2017 Silverado HDs with the Duramax turbodiesel motor.
2017MY features a patented intake system that is basically a hood scoop. It improves cooling and maintains engine performance even in difficult driving conditions. The inlet at the front of your hood supplies 60 percent of the air for the turbodiesel Duramax motor. Chevy’s new functional Hood scoop features a custom air/water separator to ensure that only dry air is drawn into its engine. The new intake system needed to be tested under real driving conditions, including rain and snow, and in windy and dusty conditions. The new intake creates an air-flow effect that sends more air into the engine, keeping it cool, when driven at highway speeds.
Chevy continues to say that the housing of the air filter draws 40% more air from a dry area in one the truck’s front bumpers. The cooler air then mixes with the cool air coming from the hood before it enters the engine’s combustion chambers. The engine is able to get enough air even if the Silverado HD hood is completely blocked. It is not only functional but also makes the truck look cooler, as shown in these photos of the Silverado 2500 HD LTZ trim.
