A mule for 2017 Volvo XC40 was spotted during testing. The prototype was seen wearing a modified V40 body. It has large alloy wheels, extended wheel arches and a higher ride height. Although it doesn’t look like the production model at all, the prototype mule may give a hint as to the overall size and shape of the entry-level crossover.
The model is still in its early stages of development so little information is available. Volvo has confirmed that the model will be riding on their Compact Modular Architecture (CMA). Volvo also revealed that models based on CMA platforms will share a variety of components, including engines, infotainment and climate control systems. Models riding on the larger SPA platform will be able to use the CMA platform.
An assortment of three- to four-cylinder engines will provide power. A new variant could be offered with the newly announced T5 Twin Engine plug in hybrid system, but this is not yet official.
