The 6.7-liter Power Stroke Diesel makes 450 horsepower, and 935 lb.ft. of torque.

The horsepower war between automakers all over the globe is well-known. A similar battle is taking place among Detroit automakers. Fewer people know that there is a similar battle.

“Super Duty customers demand the best and for 2018, we’re giving them even more power from our 6.7-liter Power Stroke Diesel – delivering both the most horsepower, and torque, among all heavy-duty pickups,” stated Todd Eckert (Ford truck group marketing manager). “Plus, the new F-450 pickup includes a 4X2 model. This allows our customers to do more with the best payload and towing.

Thanks to the new tune and redesigned heads, the engine produces 450 horsepower. This is a 10 percent increase in each figure compared to the old engine. Ford can claim the best-in-class horsepower, torque, but only barely.

Five is the key number, as Ford’s new mill outperforms the Chevrolet Silverado HD 6.66-liter Duramax diesel by five horsepower, and beats the RAM 6.7 liter Cummins diesel only by five torques. Ford claims that the Super Duty can tow a gooseneck trailer up to 34,000 pounds and a conventional hitch up to 21,000 pounds. It also has the best-in class payload at 7,360 pounds.

However, there is one caveat. Gooseneck towing is only available on the new-2018 F-450 4X2. Ford claims it was designed to haul large trailers. This means it is primarily an off-road pickup and not something that can get to remote work sites. The F-450’s two-wheel drive F-450 has a slight edge over the F-450 4X4 due to its lighter weight. However, it will disappoint those who want to spend more than $100,000 on the ultimate luxury towing rig. The F-450 4X2 is priced at $52,830, and only the Platinum trim is available. You will need 4WD to get the Limited model, which is the highest-end version.
