It’s not a typo.

The Toyota Century is now available in Japan. It was unveiled at the Tokyo Motor Show in Oct 2017. The new model will replace the old generation of large sedans, which were available in Japan for 21 years. It is the Land of the Rising Sun’s flagship model.

The new Century is described by its creator as a “cutting edge chauffeur-driven model”, with a high starting price that matches its flagship status. Toyota is asking for 19,600,000. This works out at $178,183/EUR152,750/PS134,009, depending on current exchange rates. It’s no surprise that the monthly target for sales is 50 cars, despite such a high asking price.

After a 65 millimeter (2.55 inch) increase in the wheelbase, the elegant sedan has more legroom than before. A new raised ceiling, inspired by an architectural ceiling design, provides more headroom. The height difference of 15 millimeters (6 inches) between the floor and the scuff plate makes it easier to get in and out of your car.

The interior is lavishly appointed with all the modern conveniences, including an adjustable power legrest and rear-seat entertainment system that boasts a 11.6-inch screen. A total of 20 speakers are installed throughout the cabin. There is also a touch panel that measures 7 inches between the rear seats, from which passengers can access various functions including the electric curtains.

There are also the hidden things that you don’t see. These include the sound-deadening materials and active noise control systems to reduce vibrations and noises generated during acceleration and engine start up. The electronically controlled adaptive air suspension ensures a smooth ride, just like you would expect from the most luxurious Toyota.

The new Toyota Century comes with a unique hybrid powertrain that combines a 5.0-liter V8 gasoline engine with an electric motor. This is not something wealthy owners care about. Although the V12 engine from the previous generation has been retired, the combined output of the new hybrid powertrain is 425 horsepower (317 Kilowatts). This is a significant improvement on the original twelve-cylinder unit which was rated at 276 HP (206 kW).

The new Century’s V8 combustion engine produces 375 horsepower (280 kW), at 6,200 rpm, and 510 Nm (376 Lb-ft) starting at 4,000 rpm. The electric motor is rated at 221 HP (165 kW) as well as 300 Nm (221 Lb-ft).

Toyota is currently accepting orders for the locally-built crown jewel of its range. Given its high price tag, it will be an uncommon sight on Japan’s streets.
