You will love it for all the things you love about the coupe, but with the added option to open the roof.
BMW introduces the 8 Series Convertible, just five months after revived the 8 Series name to make it a grand touring coupe. These droptops will be available in dealers across the United States starting March 2019. The base price is $121,400 plus a $995 destination fee. The hardtop, on the other hand, will be available in December for $111,900 before destination.
The M850ixDrive will be the only model available for the convertible, just like the North American coupes. The 4.4-liter twin-turbo V8 will produce 523 horsepower (390 Kilowatts) as well as 553 pound-feet (753 Newton-meters). The eight-speed automatic will switch the power between both axles as needed. In 3.8 seconds, the 8 Series cabriolet can reach 60 mph (96 km/h) while the hardtop can hit 62 mph (100.0 kph), in 3.7 seconds. The top speed electronically restricted for both models is 155 miles an hour (250 km per hour).
European buyers also have the option of the 840d xDrive. The 3.0-liter twin-turbo turboinline-six turbodiesel will produce 315 horsepower (235 kW) as well as 502 lb/ft (680 Nm). The gear changes will be handled by an eight-speed automatic.
Except for the soft top that can be electrically folded, the convertible’s styling is almost identical to the coupe. It can be lowered to the rear deck, which has matching stitching for the door panels and instrument panels. It also has subtle nacelles to evoke the coupe’s double-bubble roof design.
It takes 15 seconds to open the top and close it. It can also operate at 30 mph (48 km/h). A standard wind deflector can be placed behind the front seats to reduce wind gusts. You can get even more comfort with the optional neck warmers or air blowers inside the seats.
The 8 Series Convertible’s six-figure price doesn’t include everything. BMW has a few options for customers who need more. The optional M Carbon Exterior Package includes carbon-fiber reinforced plastic pieces for the exterior mirror caps, rear diffuser insert, and air intake bars. Customers can also add a 12-speaker Bowers & Wilkins Diamond Surround sound system to their vehicle. Glass trim is available for the engine start/stop button and the stereo volume knob, as well as covering the gearshift, iDrive Controller and iDrive Controller. People looking for more tech options can choose Driving Assistant Professional, which includes adaptive cruise control, traffic control assist, and an evasion aid that responds to pedestrians. Night vision is also available.
The 8 Series Convertible will be presented by BMW at the Los Angeles Auto Show, November 29th.
