The all-new half-ton pickup has both gas and diesel power and 10-speed transmissions. It also features a significant weight reduction compared to its predecessor.
Tonight, the all-new 2019 Chevy silverado will make its Detroit debut ahead of the North American International Auto Show press days. The Silverado was first seen in December by Chevy in the rugged Z71 Trailboss trim. Now, we have all the details on the eight trim levels.
Chevy claims that the new Silverado weighs as much as 450 more than its predecessor. This is due to the use of a mixed-material construction. It combines aluminum and steel throughout the truck. The suspension’s aluminum upper control arms reduce weight and increase rigidity. Despite its steel construction, Mark Reuss of GM calls the Silverado’s bed “the most functional bed in any full-size pickup.” The bed is nearly seven inches wider than it was before and will be available in a variety of lengths. The wheel wells have storage bins that can hold seven cubic feet of lockable storage. A power tailgate, the first of its kind in the industry, can be controlled from the inside of the truck.
The Silverado line will offer six different engines and transmissions. Reuss also announced the availability of a 3.0-liter inline six diesel engine. He said he is “really confident” that it will be the most efficient diesel in its class. The official numbers for that engine will be available soon.
The new gasoline engines will come in two sizes: a 5.3-liter small-block V8 and a 6.2-liter small block V8. Both versions are upgraded versions of the engines found in current trucks. A “dynamic fuel management” system, which can switch between one and seven cylinders depending on the demand, is among the new features. The Silverado technically can run as a single-cylinder engine. Weird. It will be mated with both engines by a 10-speed automatic.
The Silverado is slightly larger in dimensions than the Silverado before but not significantly so. Front and rear LED lights are available. Trim levels range from the base Work Truck spec to the super-lux High Country model. RST will be available as a sporty version. It will be similar to the Tahoe RST that we have already driven with big wheels and a big V8.
