Which truck is faster in a straight line. You won’t be surprised by the result.
The power of trucks is greater than ever. For example, the 2019 Ford F-150 Limited. The Raptor’s twin-turbocharged, V6 engine underneath the Limited allows it to sprint to 60 mph (96 km) in just 5.1 seconds according Car. This truck is the most powerful the company has ever tested. How does the big brother, the Ranger, stand up to its little brother?
The F-150 is, on paper at least, a more powerful vehicle. The Ranger’s turbocharged 2.3-liter four-cylinder engine produces just 270 horsepower (201 Kilowatts) as well as 310 pound-feet (442 Newton-meters). In comparison, the F-150’s twin-turbocharged V6 produces 375 HP (279 kW) while the F-150 produces 470 lb-ft (637Nm) of torque. The Ranger weighs in at just 4,400 pounds (1.995 kg) when fully loaded. While the F-150 is more than 5,000, the Ranger weighs in at over 5,000 pounds (2.267 kilograms), depending upon the specification.
The Fast Lane Truck team put these pickups up against one another on a drag track. The result was… expected. The F-150 is faster than the other trucks. The F-150’s twin-turbocharged engine pushes the 5,000-pound beast off the line with power. The Ranger is not far behind, with its best-in class 310 lbft of torque keeping things interesting.
The F-150 easily outguns Ranger at the end of the two races. The Ranger still has more than 100 horses (74kW) and 160 lb-ft torque, even with all-wheel drive and the same 10-speed transmission. The F-150 wins both races by approximately a truck length.
Truck buyers, don’t let this discourage you. The Ranger still delivers plenty of power. ‘s 310 lb-ft torque and 10-speed transmission, which were borrowed from the F-150, are outstanding. It’s also the most affordable of the two, starting at $24,300.
