Intelligent Drive and an MBUX infotainment program make this the most advanced A Class yet.
The trendy Mercedes A Class hatchback, which is tech-heavy, isn’t coming to the U.S. It’s tragic, I know. It’s easy to see why American buyers would want the five-door, but Mercedes-Benz has just revealed the next best thing: the A-Class Sedan. Perhaps America doesn’t really need a five door.
Although it is very familiar in design, the sedan’s exterior is quite striking. This stylish sedan draws heavily from the CLA and takes cues from A-Class hatchbacks. It is also the most slippy Mercedes, with a drag coefficient just 0.22. The A-Class Sedan measures 179.1 inches longer than the CLA (182.3 ins), but has a shorter wheelbase (107.4 ins vs. 106.3 ins). Depending on the trim, wheel options vary from 17 to 19 inches.
At launch, the A-Class sedan will come in two flavors: A220 and A220 4Matic. The 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine will power both trims. It produces 188 horsepower (140 Kilowatts) as well as 221 pound-feet (299 Newton meters) of torque. This is coupled with a seven speed dual clutch transmission. It is slightly more powerful than the A-Class hatch (161 horsepower / 185lb-ft).
The A-Class Sedan has new technology inside. The MBUX infotainment systems from the A-Class hatchback and Sprinter are still available. This is the first U.S.-made model to have the high-resolution widescreen cockpit, touchscreen media display and augmented reality capabilities. Mercedes describes it as the most advanced display.
You have the option of choosing between a pair standard seven-inch touchscreens and an optional set 10.25-inch screens. Additional costs may apply for a head-up display or intelligent voice control. You can access the latter by saying “Hey Mercedes!”
MBUX isn’t the only option. A suite of safety features is now available on the A-Class sedan. The S-Class’s Intelligent Drive system is still in use, giving the A-Class the ability “semi-autonomously” under certain conditions.
It can see up to 1,500ft (500m) with its improved camera and radar system. The optional package also includes automatic emergency braking and Lane Keep Assist. It can automatically adjust its speed to accommodate for any corners, intersections and roundabouts.
Dealers will soon be able to purchase the new Mercedes A-Class Sedan. Soon after, the AMG A35 model should be available. This has been tested. The fully-hot A45 models will be available only after we wait.
