2019 Mercedes-AMG GT 4-Door Coupe Storms Geneva with 630 HP

It was worth the wait.

It is finally here. We finally have the full details on the AMG GT four door coupe that we’ve wanted for a long time. It’s actually called it’s name, the AMG GT 4-Door Coupe. The number 4 is used instead of the word. We promise, that this is the best thing about the latest rocket ship Affalterbach.

Let’s get to the good stuff. Did you remember when we said that the car would likely have more than 600 horsepower? The Mercedes-AMG GT 63 S, the range-topping model, actually produces 630 hp (470 kilowatts), from its 4.0-liter biturbo-V8. The Mercedes-AMG GT 63 is snuck beneath, and it’s tuned to produce a familiar 577 hp (577 kW) from the same engine. Both mills are capable of producing a lot of power and can be used to increase efficiency while cruising.

The Mercedes-AMG GT 53 is the third and final model. It’s quite surprising. It uses a turbocharged 3.0-liter Inline-Six engine to generate 429 horsepower (367 kW) in what would be called the entry-level package. Technically, the 53 is a mild hybrid. It combines the mill with Merc’s EQ Boost system which acts as a starter-alternator. It is installed between the engine & transmission, adding 21 horsepower (16 Kw) and 184 pound-feet (249 Newton meters) of torque.

All models come with an AMG Speedshift nine speed automatic. It turns all four wheels using AMG’s 4Matic+ all wheel drive system. The V8 and inline six versions have some differences. The 63 S and 63 S have the MCT gearboxes with a wet clutch, which allows for more power and torque. The 53 has the TCT transmission and a conventional torque converter. The all-wheel drive system sends power where it is most effective on all trims. However, the V8 cars have an optional drift function. This allows the engine to send power where it is most fun and efficient.

What does this all mean for performance? Mercedes claims that the GT 63 S can reach 60 mph in 3.1 seconds. This is convenient because it’s one tenth faster than Porsche fastest four door coupe, the 680-hp (507Kw) Panamera Turbo S EHybrid. Mercedes claims that the standard 63 can do the same sprint in just 3.3 seconds while the 53 will take it in 4.4 seconds. Mercedes claims these 0-60 times are estimates. However, the top speeds for each trim, 195 mph and 193 mph respectively, are , not estimates.

The AMG GT 4-Door Coupe’s stunning looks are unquestionable, regardless of trim level. All models receive the sleek active aero package, which includes the air panel in front of the bumper and the retractable spoiler back. An optional aero kit can be added to V8 models that includes a modified rear diffuser and a larger front splitter. This package replaces the active rear spoiler with a fixed wing, which can be manually adjusted. There are many suspension options available. V8 cars have active rear steering, which turns the rear wheels in the opposite direction to the front wheels at speeds below 62 MPH. To increase stability, the rear wheels rotate in the same direction as the fronts at speeds above 62 mph.

The new AMG GT features a full-on glass cockpit with dual 12.3 inch screens and lots of tech. We should not forget that the new high-performance Merc, even though sedan or hatchback were never mentioned, is technically a family car. The interior space and cargo space statistics have not yet been released, however the rear seats have a 60/40 split capability which means that this AMG GT can legally haul people and their stuff. The U.S.-spec model can only hold four people for reasons that we are still not sure of. Rest of the world will offer seating for five.

Officially, the new Mercedes-AMG GT 4-Door Mercedes-AMG GT 4-Door will be unveiled at the 2018 Geneva Motor Show. However, we won’t be able to see the cars on the roads until next year. The V8 models will be launched in early 2019, with the AMG GT 53 coming a few months later. All models will have their prices announced closer to launch.
