The A-Class has a modern facelift, an updated interior and lots of new tech.

The A-Class is one of many offerings in the Mercedes-Benz line-up that will be updated as part of an evolutionary upgrade. Although the compact car has been in existence since 1997, it has only recently changed from a subcompact to a mainstream hatchback.

With a new model, the German automaker wants to maintain its mass-market success. Today’s fourth-generation A-Class was revealed. It rides on a completely new platform, has loads of new tech and features a brand new look. The final product is very similar to our rendering and stands out from the previous version.

The new A-Class’s standard headlights look sharp and angular, with new LED daytime running lights fixtures. The larger grille is similar to the new CLS sedan. Multibeam LED headlights are also available. Each has 18 independently actuated LEDs.

The fascia has two lower vents at each corner. A larger central vent adds an aggressive look. The A-Class’s new design is more sculptured than its predecessor, which had larger headlights and a more rounded fascia.

The new A-Class’s back is stunning, at least in comparison to the previous model. The old bulbous taillights are gone. Instead, a new set of sculpted taillights extend from the edge the license plate frame to reach the rear quarter panel. The rear diffuser has a more prominent appearance and, depending on the trim, includes yellow accent features. Although the rear window’s height appears to be reduced by the sloped roofline, overall it is a much more attractive package than the previous model.

In terms of styling, the new A-Class’s side profile has been significantly reduced from the previous model. A more subtle edge has replaced the large, swooping design element which extended from the front wheelwell to near the taillight.

The A-Class’s wheelbase has increased by 1.2 inches (30 mm) over the previous model. It also features a track that is half an inch (14 cm) wider which gives the cabin more space. The new A-Class rides a little lower and looks a lot more sleeker than its predecessor, without having to reduce the greenhouse’s size.

The interior of the new A-Class looks like it has some parts from the previous model. You can see the same centrally located vents as well as a similar-looking steering wheel. But, dig deeper and you will find that the new version is much more tech-focused.

The A-Class is first Mercedes to get the MBUX infotainment technology. The new digital instrument cluster and the massive central infotainment display replace the smaller outgoing screen. These are the optional 10.25-inch monitors. Standard features include 7-inch screens.

The old box under the air vents was replaced by a simpler layout. A larger storage compartment is located underneath the A/C controls. This makes the cabin feel more spacious. You can also use the optional touchpad to adjust infotainment settings from the console.
