2019 VW Touareg Details Emerge: Longer, Wider, Lighter, 7 Seats

According to the grapevine, a torquetastic biturbodiesel engine V8 will soon be available. The cabin will also have a 28-inch display.

Volkswagen released a teaser with the 2019 Tuareg last week, but did not reveal any details about its all-new luxury SUV. We don’t need to wait until the official unveiling of the model in Beijing, China on March 23 to find out more about the engine. Wolfsburg sources have revealed some juicy details about it.

The Touareg will be the first vehicle to offer seven seats. This likely means that it will expand in size to accommodate the two additional rear seats. According to the report, VW The SUV has been stretched by 60 millimeters (2.3 in) which is consistent with the MLB Evo platform’s improved packaging. This will result in a larger cabin. The new Touareg will share the same underpinnings as the Audi Q7 and Porsche Cayenne. This will result in a 25mm (nearly one inch) larger cabin.

The 2019 Touareg will not be heavier than the previous model due to its increased footprint. Instead, the platform will reduce 65 kg (143 pounds) and allow base models with smaller engines to weigh less that two tons. They start at 1,950kg (4,300 lbs).

As far as the engines are concerned, the not-for-United-States Touareg will be available with a couple of 3.0-liter V6 gasoline and diesel units, along with a biturbo 4.0-liter V8 feeding on gasoline. Mild hybrid tech will be used across the range. The most intriguing engine is a rumored V8 Diesel with a couple turbochargers to provide an undisclosed amount of mountain-moving torque. A plug-in hybrid variant will be available in the future.

The T-Prime Concept GTE, which is shown above, shows that the new Touareg will feature some major changes inside the cabin. It will include what will be called the “Innovision Cockpit”, a 28-inch-wide touchscreen with an elegant glass surface and a huge touchscreen. This large display is the result of combining the digital instrument cluster and the actual infotainment system in a single piece, as we have seen in concept cars.

The 2019 Touareg will be loaded with the most recent tech. It will receive rear-wheel steering and active anti-roll bars. A fancy air suspension will provide a smooth ride. The SUV will be compliant with level 3 autonomy requirements like the new Audi A8. However, it will not be available immediately as the legislation is still in development.

Some believe VW will move production to China. However, the redesigned Touareg will be assembled at the same facility in Bratislava (Slovakia’s capital).
