The BMW X6 has returned – but it didn’t really go anywhere. Bimmer’s largest crossover coupe, the X6, is now in its third generation. It is more refined, more powerful, as well as loaded with more tech. The 2020 BMW X6 is built on the same BMW Cluster Architecture, (CLAR), as its older sibling, the X5. The X6’s sleek, sculpted appearance is not affected by the new platform. The X6 remains a striking CUV. It also features fun exterior options such as an illuminated grille.

However, the new platform will bring new powertrains. The entry-level sDrive40i/xDrive40i models use BMW’s turbocharged twin-scroll 3.0-liter inline-6, which produces 335 horsepower (249 kilowatts), and 330 poundfeet (447 Newton meters) of torque. These numbers are a slight increase of 33 hp (25kW) and 35lb-ft (447 Newton-meters) over the previous version. It takes the sDrive model 5.2 seconds to reach 60 mph (96 km/h), while the xDrive version takes 5.3 seconds.
BMW’s twin-turbocharged 4.4 liter V8 is used instead in the more powerful X6 M50i. This engine generates 523 horsepower (390 kW), 553 pound-feet (775 Nm) of torque and produces 523 HP (390 kW), an increase of 78HP (58 kW), and 74lb-ft (100%) respectively over its predecessor. The X6 M50i takes just 4.1 seconds for it to reach 60 (0.5 second faster than its predecessor), and will continue to travel a restricted speed of 155 mph (249 km/h). The X6 M50i can tow 7,200 pounds (3.265 kg) if it is equipped with the factory trailer package.
The eight-speed automatic transmission used in both the V8 and inline-six versions of the X6 is the same as elsewhere in the BMW range. The X6 is more agile thanks to its double-wishbone front suspension and five-link rear suspension. An optional Dynamic Handling package provides performance upgrades such as active roll stabilization or active steering. Active steering uses an electric swivel motor to reduce body roll and the former uses electric swivel to turn the rear wheels in or out to combat slippage depending on speed and road conditions.
You can get your X6 rugged if you wish. Optional off-road packages are available for the xDrive40i model. This kit includes a two-axle air suspension and an electronically controlled M Sport rear differential. It also offers four off-road driving modes that can be used for snow, gravel, gravel, or rocks.
The X6 is a great choice for safety. BMW’s Active Driving Assistant is standard equipment. This is basically radar cruise control for stop and go traffic, blind-spot detections, forward collision warnings, and park distance control. Buyers of the X6 can purchase more active equipment for an additional fee such as lane-keep assistance, automatic lane change assist, side collision avoidance and others.
The base X6-sDrive40i starts at $64,300 in America, and $995 for delivery. The xDrive40i model starts at $66,600. This is a slight difference from the rear-wheel drive model. While the M50i model starts at $85,650, the xDrive40i model costs $66,600. The X6 was built in the United States at BMW’s Spartanburg, South Carolina manufacturing plant.
