The convoy included a standard model and an extended ESV. They are still massive.
General Motors gave us new full-size pickup trucks for Chevrolet, and GMC. Cadillac doesn’t make a truck but the Escalade was just as large and we now have our first look at the next-generation SUV. We’re seeing something big and bulky with four wheels and heavy covers from stem to stern. Cadillac wants to keep the secret for a while longer.
How can we tell if there is a Caddy underneath all the fabric? The grille is an obvious sign of a Caddy. It can be seen behind the white cover but it’s still easily identifiable as the new mesh design that the company has used on the XT4 crossover. We suspect there is more to the trickery, as the camouflage’s crosshairs look very Ram-like. But we aren’t fooled. It is possible to make design changes to the headlights. These should follow the XT4’s direction and have a more horizontal orientation instead of the vertical blocky design.
We can also see new rectangular exhaust outlets at both the rear and side. Other details are difficult to spot. The taillights will remain low and have a tall look. The backside looks as good as ever. However, certain body lines are still well-covered.
We don’t know much about powertrains yet, but a hybrid arrangement is almost certain. The Escalade comes with the familiar 6.2-liter V8 that produces 420 horsepower (313kilowatts), and is connected to a 10-speed auto. This engine could continue, or Cadillac could use its new 4.2-liter twin turbo Blackwing engine. The new mill could make a great fit for the large SUV, given GM’s recent announcement about layoffs.
This is our first glimpse at the standard Escalade, and the longer ESV model. We don’t expect a reveal anytime soon. This model is expected to debut in 2020, according to our estimates.
