2020 Corvette Storage Test: How Much Cargo Can You Fit With The Top Stood?

Spoiler alert! Not much.

For decades, removable hardtops have been a Corvette standard. It’s no exception to this rule. The 2020 C8 also comes in a convertible with a power-folding hardtop. The standard version’s roof panel can be lifted manually and fitted into the Corvette’s rear storage space behind the engine. Storage space is a problem on smaller two-seat sports cars, especially mid-engine ones. How much space does the top take up when it’s stored in storage?

This video is from Cars, and Crosbie on YouTube. It attempts to answer this question. The video begins with an overview of the rear storage area before the roof is removed. Chevrolet has told us that the 2020 Corvette contains approximately 13 cubic feet storage, which is split between the rear and front areas. We also know that a set golf clubs can fit in the back of the car as long as it’s still attached to the roof.

It is obvious that rear space has been reduced, but not as much than one might expect. Because the top fits snugly in the storage area at an angle there is plenty of space below for smaller items. A couple of small backpacks can be tucked under the top. There’s also room for miscellaneous smaller items. Although the frunk remains unaffected by larger bags, it isn’t very useful. The roof will need to be on for weekend trips in the C8 unless you are packing very light.

This video also shows some interesting differences between the C8 (previous-generation C7) and C8. The video reveals that the C8 is more quiet inside. This is due to a combination of factors. The C8’s removable roof allows for less air to enter, and is therefore smaller. The windshield rake of the C8 is different. While the cockpit in the C7 was combined with its rear storage area and cockpit, the C8 stops right behind the driver. This means that there is less space inside for sound and wind to reverberate. While it’s not a scientific observation it makes sense.

The C8 convertible will offer a new experience. Coronavirus is still causing delays in Corvette manufacturing and first-drive events. We will have to wait for our seat time in the official convertible drop-top.
